Hands that are used to light, cheap pens may associate the added weight of the Expert with a sense of added importance. When first picked up, the Expert “feels” more expensive. The Expert’s brass barrel is nearly twice as heavy as the Meisterstuck’s solid resin case. The Expert has a lacquer-over-brass barrel the Meisterstuck barrel is cast from resin. The barrels of the two pens, however, are made from different materials. The Meisterstuck and the Expert have roughly the same size barrels visually, the pens seem to have the same weight. While the two pens look at home side-by-side, the iconic mark of the Montblanc and the classic nature of the Meisterstuck’s profile give it an undeniable edge over the Expert. The Expert clearly takes its style tips from the Montblanc. The Expert (and the Expert II) have updated from a gold-ringed black band to a more elaborate appointment that is more reminiscent of the Montblanc in recent years. The Expert, on the other hand, has changed its style more than once in the past five years. The Classique has kept its design constant for more than twenty-five years the Montblanc logo is famous even outside of pen collecting circles. Although there are only minimal differences in their look, the Meisterstuck Classique design is the more timeless of the pair. The Expert and the Meisterstuck could be siblings. The pens are both thick cigar-style pens with center gold rings. The Expert has the slanted top and thick clip that is a standard style marker of the Waterman brand. The Meisterstuck is iconic with the snow-capped Montblanc logomark on the tip. The Expert and the Meisterstuck have two of the most classic pen silhouettes in the luxury pen world. The Waterman Expert is a 5-year-old brown with gold trim ballpoint that has been carefully maintained. The Meisterstuck Classique that I am reviewing is a 24-year-old black with gold trim ballpoint that has been in and out of meetings, boardrooms, and conferences.
